Duncan Truant is a former employee at the detective's office, who somehow wound up as an inmate at the California Maximum Security Prison (CalMax) 21 years earlier. For reasons at first unknown to him, Duncan is released from CalMax completely out of the blue. Duncan soon realizes that the hardest part of his life outside the prison walls will be to try to reconnect with his family. Since he left, his wife has become a bit of a celebrity, his son has just started working as a detective in the same office he once worked, and his daughter -- who was born five months after his incarceration -- knows absolutely nothing about him.

But when word comes down that Milgate Epoch wrote down Duncan’s name just before his death, Duncan realizes that this could be his destiny. To make something of himself. To save lives. To stop The Poisoned from their paths of destruction. Will he be able to convince his family to join his quest? Or will past histories win out?
