Characters (with PILOT)

CHARACTERS
A half-hour comedy from Alden Caele

Alex Shedden is a loser.

Working a dead-end part-time job in a bookstore while his dreams of screenwriting waste away more and more on a daily basis, he expends only the minimum energy needed to survive. He's essentially given up on ever being more than he currently is.

Then, as things go, everything changes. Suddenly, the characters from his shitty no-one-will-read-it work start interfering in his life - literally. They start manifesting in real life... and most of them are, for some unknown reason, trying to kill him. Only an oversexed Bond clone and an exotic Asian princess with superpowers seem to be on his side, and the latter is only because he's paying her.

Now Alex must discover everything within himself he's refused to access. Whatever heroism, strength, determination and creativity he's locked away must be brought out into the light if he's to survive this baptism by fire. With a capable crew around him, he may just survive...

THE CAST

Alex Shedden - 24 years old and many miles from L.A., Alex Shedden is never going to be J.J. Abrams, as much as he dreams of it. So he subsists on a job that requires no work, in a life one can only really describe as pathetic. But Alex, as lazy and bored as he is, is also many other things: uneasy in his own skin, restless and ready for something more.

Dark Clayton - Alex's main protector, an action movie hero that never got written beyond the first draft, and remains an oversexed, kind-of-cheesy asshole who takes his own cool factor for granted. Dark is the king of fighting, with a wall covered in guns and swords at home, and great at getting laid... but as a person? He's got a lot of growing to do now that he's flesh and blood.

Beth - Alex's best friend since he was 14, Beth is a smart, acerbic young woman with a good head on her shoulders and a good work ethic. Despite that, she's technically no higher on the totem pole than he is, and is filled with bitterness over it. Of the Core Four, Beth is the most level-headed, but perhaps also the most desiring to let go of the normal and embrace the magic of the chaos surrounding Alex...

Marina - An exotic princess from Alex's longstanding attempts at a fantasy novel, Marina is cheeky, brash and reckless. A mercenary motivated by money, she starts off as Alex's worst enemy, but soon becomes one of his closest allies... even if he's never quite sure if he can trust her once the money runs out.

Normandy - The Junior Manager at Books Mart, where Alex and Beth work. He's a snippy control freak, but largely harmless.

EPISODES

1x01, "The Creative Process" (revised first draft)
Alex Shedden's bad day gets worse when his own characters start appearing in his daily life, and occasionally trying to kill him.

1x02, "The Dreaded Second Episode"
While Alex must figure out how to defeat his smartest villain, Dark considers asking out Beth.

1x03, "Real Goddamned Magic"
When a magic shop opens up in the plaza near the Books Mart, at first Alex doesn't pay it any mind. But when he recognises it as the epicentre of a 'be careful what you wish for' screenplay he once wrote, the wishes of those around him start to send things haywire.

1x04, "Will They Won't They"
The love interests from Dark and Marina's scripts appear, trying to woo them away from helping Alex.

1x05, "The Trippy Mindfuck Dream Episode"
When the Books Mart crew have a camping trip to 'bond', the trip is complicated by the fact that the elves and faeries of Alex's hard fantasy script appear from the woodwork to create hallucinatory chaos. Meanwhile, Dark and Marina are left alone in the town, and follow the group, also getting ensnared into the fun.

1x06, "Let's Do the Mister Miyagi Thing"
Dark and Marina start to train Alex and Beth in the way of self-defense, aided by Dark's would-be love interest Bentley Ice and Marina's one-time love Takeshi. But the love connections, and a potential mole in the group, cause the training to erupt into chaos.

1x07, "The Peanut Butter War"
Hijinks ensue when Dark and Alex come into conflict about their different roommate styles. Namely, their shared antipathy for cleaning, doing dishes, or any kind of home maintenance. What erupts is a war of warrior on student to see who can push the other to clean up his act first - or die in the process.

======

This is the partial completed first-draft pilot for Characters, my attempt at a (possibly animated) comedy in the vein of Chuck. My purpose with this script wasn't production, or a pick up in the VS world. My only intent was to have fun and play with some characters I enjoyed spending time with, and get more practice under my belt with comedy.

Anyone get a chance to give this a read? :) Would love to get a sense whether this is a 'show people' script or a 'toil in personal time for personal enjoyment' type one. Happy to do a one-for-one read, too! Come on! Who hasn't suffered through bad comedy for a friend at least once? ;)

Just finished reading the first 20 pages and I have to say this is really well written.  I don't think I have had so many "laugh out loud" moments before.  I'll start by saying the main character Alex is so pathetic that you can't help but instantly root for this guy.  By far Beth is my favorite character.  Your description of her in her uniform being like a caged animal was perfect.  I hope there is more of her in the future.  Normandy the boss and Alex's scene was pretty funny, the same goes when he was stopped by Mrs. Larson.  Bonkers, funny funny stuff.  I like the chemistry all your characters, so-far, have with the main character.  Their banter is refreshing, and realistic.  I love the "script" references like "training montage?".   Overall this would definitely be something I would read because it was rather funny and very enjoyable.  thup thup thup

Wow, umm... awesome! :D Definitely not the review I expected, but 100% the review I hoped for! The fact that there was even one laugh out loud moment blows me away, considering, well, the one thing the PS panel consistently said to my last comedy pilot was not laughing once.  Thanks, Darrin. Hugely appreciated.

Perhaps I will finish this after all.

Just give this a read, and intriguing idea.  Does have that slight sense of Chuck to the idea.

It wasn't afwul, but more, enjoyable for me I think.  The characters are funny at times, and come across with their own characteristics.  The Montage scene was wonderfully created.

The idea behind the whole storyline was strange and yet, something new and imaginitive.  A great idea.  Would be interested to see how this moves forward if you do, and where you take it.  Certainly has the characters to make it interesting and the concept to give us something totally different from what we usually read and see.  Could see, as suggested, Beth being one of the main character stars in the series that really stands out over the rest.

Brilliant! :D Glad you liked it, Guk! Beth's my secret favourite, with her deadpan ways. Though there's one member of the cast who hasn't quite popped up yet...

Thanks for reading, guys, and enjoying! Really glad I'm not crazy. I'll see what I can do about getting a full script of this up sometime.

Response has been positive enough to propel me to eventually finish this sucker, so though I have no time at the moment, it's definitely going in line. :) I'm gonna leave it up for a few more days in case anyone wants to read it before it goes, then I'll be taking down the link til I've got a full first draft to show folks.

Thanks again guys! Very much appreciated.

For the most part, I thought the script was pretty good. Very funny and witty. I thought the idea was very interesting. I haven't seen 'Chuck' yet (unfortunately), so I couldn't find any similarities to the show. It might just be me, but I found Beth to be a more memorable character than Alex. I just felt that she had more interesting personality than Alex. Overall, I liked it. Hope to see more. :)

First off, thanks Rocky! Much appreciated. :)

Very funny and witty.

That makes me grin.

It's funny, because Beth's my favourite too, and I never expected her to break out so much! Beth is definitely one of the Core Four, so I'm glad she pops. I think Alex, in particular, would be best performed. The right actor would make him sing. What's on the page has bits of a personality, but so much of his character is tied up in physical humour and tone that I can see where he'd fall flatter than the witty and likeable Beth.

Thanks again!

As a thanks to those who so kindly read and reviewed the initial partial pilot, I've posted up the full first draft. Now, the back half is pretty lifeless, as I was mostly charging forward to a complete draft, but it means I can actually work to improving it now. :) I hope folks who enjoyed the half-draft get a kick out of seeing it wrapped up!

Haha, thanks Brian! I honestly expected this script to get torn apart, so I'm really glad so many folks have liked it!

Might poke around with a second script. I have an idea or two. Like the pilot, it's a good escape from my darker projects! :) Thanks, Brian and everyone who have read and reviewed.

Would I be able to move this over to the Warehouse? I'm not 100% sure I'll pitch it next PS, but what I do know is that I can't stop working on it and that it's a possibility.

I'll see what I can about reforming the opening post into a proper pitch. :)

Now that the wonderful chaos of Pilot Season is (mostly) over, thought I'd pop up here and check in:

Would anyone like me to throw the first draft up of 1x02? As well as a general call for any suggestions for improving the pilot, o course...

In the meantime, Brian gave me some excellent notes on 1x02, and I'm waiting on notes on the pilot from a handful of folks (including 2 of my uni classmates). So while I've got a lot of other things I'm focusing on, I do want to slowly push forward on this, and I'd love to do that on MZPtv if there's interest. :)

Well I personally though the pilot was INCREDIBLY hilarious!

"Characters" is definitely one of the most... unique VS script I've read thus far and I'm the type who tends to flock to unusual things so, yeah, this is my long-winded way of saying I'd totally love reading 1.02 of this series  :D

Wow, thanks DC! :D I'll give it a look over, see if I can beef up the comedic elements (as I've mostly got the action/character beats down in this draft), and maybe post it up for yall.

I must say, the pitch is very intriguing. You have the best episode titles ever! :D

It slipped under the radar in the Parade Ground while Pilot Season was just kicking off, so most folks did. :D And thanks! Having a VS comedy without awesome titles would be downright offensive!

Link's still up, and there's always more where that came from, so don't be afraid to join the gaggle of satisfied readers above. ;)

This can go in the regular Pitch section, I think. I'm still working out kinks, but a completed pilot draft should be enough of a foundation for a full-on pitch. :)
