Moving Home - SMF Q&A and FAQ
« on: February 28, 2009, 06:13:33 PM »

Obviously people may have a lot of questions about SMF as things are a little different from Proboards (good!).

I'll try and make up a quick FAQ built up from any questions you have.

Forum Display

How do I change my theme?

Go to "Profile", then "Look and Layout Preferences", and click the "Change" button next to "Current Theme".

Where is quick reply?

Go to "Profile", then "Look and Layout Preferences", then "Use quick reply on topic display"

How do I go right back to the thread after posting?

Go to "Profile", then "Look and Layout Preferences", then "Return to topics after posting by default"

Help! A category has disappeared!

With SMF you can "collapse" a category (very handy if you have zero interest in a certain section of MZP). All you need to do to collapse and un-collapse a category is to click the little icon next to the category name, such as "The MZP Control Room".

Can I make the reply box bigger?

Yup, just click the - / + signs below the box.

How do I stop videos (such as youtube) showing up?

Surrounding the link with [noembed][/noembed] will stop the link converting to a video in the post.
DO NOT COPY/PASTE THE TAGS I'VE USED HERE, THEY WONT WORK!

Moderation/Advanced Options

How do I sticky/lock/etc my thread?

While in the new topic screen, simply click "Additional Options".

Is there a quicker way to edit my posts?

Yes! SMF has a quick edit function that you'll see in the bottom right hand corner of your post (in this theme it looks like a pencil on some paper). Simply click that and you can quickly edit your post.

How do I change the order of my stickied topics?

Simples! Just click "Order Stickied Topics" in any forum you moderate, and you'll get the option to move them up or down by giving them a unique number. The higher the number, the higher on the forum they'll be.

Remember, any questions or queries can be thrown into this thread.

So, first impressions of the board while we're still in the pre-launch phase?

Yes, ask ask ask, there is nothing we can't answer. I've also added a couple more answers in the opening post.

I've installed a new package that allows you to increase or decrease the side of the reply box, which is very handy for editing the often HUGE posts we deal with here. Just click the - / + signs :)

Have to say a big thanks Vaughn for migrating all that info for The Feratu Chronicles from the old MZP forum to here for me. I've been busy with RL and only just logged in now. You and everyone else involved in the move have done an excellent job. Well done!

I'm having trouble. URL links that go to youtube are showing the videos themselves, when all I want are the links. It was suggested I use [ noembed ] [ /noembed ] but that's not helping.

Here's what happening:

Write the tags out yourself, you can't copy the ones I used because there's an empty character in there.

As you can see above, it now works.

Yup it works. I could have sworn I didn't have this problem a few days ago. Very odd.

Because I installed a new package that converts them automatically. If there are any complaints about it I'll remove it.

It wouldn't be that big of a problem if there was a noembed button next to the spoiler button. Typing that out for all of my songs is painstaking. :(

That's a good idea, I'll work on that soon. Though you can copy/paste your own tags to speed it up.

Not bad. I still have a soft spot for the old website, but I like this one too.

So, I need some help. I can't change my username or password. My email registration confirms it's correct, it just won't work.

A couple of friendly ideas/suggestions (definitely NOT complaints):

  • It would be nice if the "Most Recent" function displayed people's avatars etc in a left-hand column.  I'm far too lazy to squint my eyes up at the little headers!
  • Also if the "Personal Text" section of our profiles was a bit longer -- I can't fit in my oh-so-witty quote from "Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense" anymore!   :D

That's the list function working nicely though.   ;)

Second one should be an easy edit, first one might not be possible. I'll have a look

As for the recent posts, not sure about adding avatars in, but how about blowing up the font size so there's less squinting? :)

Limit removed, go nuts.

We have had a little bug where long posts wouldn't take and gave the user a fatal error, so cross your fingers.
