Okay then!
The S2 premiere of Premonition - I wasn't expecting this to arrive as quickly as it has, and I have to say I'm glad it did, as the episode picks up the baton and runs with it.
In fact, this season opener is one of the strongest episodes the series has done - Tony's writing has matured to an extremely confident level, and his full vision of the future that he's constructed for Premonition is given a complete showing here.
There are some eye-popping images scattered throughout, from the desolate Earth to the sprawling Alpha Prime - and they all add up to paint a vivid picture - superb VS writing.
But it's in the characterisation in which this episode succeeds so admirably - each of the main cast are re-introduced into the fray with at least one scene of their own - in arguably better fashion than in the pilot. Pairing Bow & Qulana is always a worthwhile move - the down-to-earth and the mysterious - and they get some great moments together stranded in the past. It's the crew of the Premonition, though, that get the best deal - Kanotris, Ducane and Rhade all shine, but it's Ilane who really impressed - given much more to do here than in the entirety of the first season!
Surprisingly, it's Morgan who comes off the worst, characterisation-wise, as his expanded role unfortunately confines him to a John McClane-esque action hero - complete with one-liners and an annoying habit of talking to himself! Despite that, his rescue scene was played well.
I'm also unsure about the new character of Twelve - he plays like a cross between Gary Seven and Doctor Who's The Doctor - but he comes across a little wishy-washy for my liking. It would perhaps have been more interesting to have seen Seven return instead, but I'm withholding full judgement until I see more of him...
The ending is also played exceptionally well - with challenges in two time periods, most notably the encounter between Bow and Premonition's crew as they prepare to steal the ship in the first place! Timey-wimey hijinks will ensue, I'm sure...
In short, a cracking season opener, showcasing what Premonition can do that no other Trek show can!
