Season One was disappointing. I'm just gonna go ahead and throw that out there. It had too much cast to handle, and at times it was truly mediocre. Season Two is an improvement - more
Buffy Season Six than Season Seven. It definitely has bad parts - like the occasional criminal misusing of Xander Harris - but there's finally enough good to distill the bad and make for a more enjoyable series.
My first major complaint: Don't. Leave. The. Academy. The girls should just stay there - that's where the better episodes happen. My second major complaint: Sofia has become less likeable. We don't necessarily need a hero that we can completely root for and love undyingly. Just a hero we like, and this time Sofia isn't it. My third major complaint: Greg. Love Bradley Cooper and love continuing the Giles legacy, but he's just not interesting and I didn't care for him. My final major complaint: Roland, who is to
Slayer Academy what Adam and the Initiative were to
Buffy - the worst Big Bads around.
Major pluses: Skye. Frickin'. Underwood. Arguably the best character in the Jossverse that wasn't created in the original show or official spin-offs. Dana Wells, one of the most delightfully twisted Slayers in the continuity. I'm definitely glad she was used in
Slayer Academy - she's a delight to read about - psychos are much more fun! Another major plus: The final episode. This is something
Slayer Academy never fails to get right, the finales - great battles, wonderful cliffhangers... it's the major reason I continue to read onto the next season.
And The Cabal. Having not read Season Three yet, I don't know what will happen, but I can already tell they're going to be better villains than Roland.
The major seasonal arc - the death of Heidi - was well played. Not at a
Veronica Mars level of mystery excellence, but still very well done. Another reason this season triumphs more often than it's predecessor.
So, in conclusion: Better than the previous season, but still retaining major flaws. With the plotlines set up for next season and at the rate this show is improving, Season Three could prove to be very entertaining.
