When we left them, Alex and Maria believed Gwen had been kidnapped by Drake whilst in fact she was asking him for answers about who she really was - to which Drake responds that only Amarra, who he has now blended with, can answer her questions.
Having seen what happened for himself, Whistler informs the rest of his team that Gwen had gone willingly with Drake. They don’t believe him, but when they return to Whistler’s house they find her there waiting for them. While the team argues over what's happened lately - Gwen quickly falls ill and it becomes apparent that she has been drained of her powers and that it is killing her.
Ben (James Nesbitt) returns to Los Angeles and warns the team that they don’t have long before Drake summons the vampire god we saw in the 1x06 flashbacks. He also reveals to Maria, in private, that he has learned of her duplicity and he’s been ordered to take her back to the council when they are done preventing the apocalypse.
Following a conversation with the Black Coat Man, Drake speaks to Tory (Sarah Shahi), the new second-in-command following Jack’s defeat in 1x04 and asks her to find something for him. She later attacks Jacob Moss (Adrian Pasdar) (the man who, in the 1x02 alternaverse was kidnapped by the Shadowforms) and takes from him the same device we saw Gwen steal for the Black Coat Man in the pilot.
The team prepare for war, gathering allies in the form of Michael (Lennie James) and his transformed son Elliot (Christopher Judge) from 1x03. The wounded Jacob feels drawn to them having heard about them. It is suggested that them meeting his counterpart in the other dimension also draws him to them. He doesn’t remember them from the of course, but it's a little like deja vu. Finally, Victor (Michael Emmerson) would return, warning that the end was coming and that not all of them would survive, looking at Alex when he says it. The team would therefore consist of: Alex, Maria, Whistler, Michael, Elliot, Victor, Jacob and Gwen, who is recharged enough to fight for a short while thanks to a spell cast by Jacob.
Looking for any more allies, the team goes to visit Willy’s bar. This scene would see three key deaths, with Willy dying moments after they arrive from wounds sustained in unseen attack. His entire bar has been ransacked and there are no surviving demons inside. The culprit is revealed to be Drake, who attacks the team. They manage to fight him off well enough at first, though his immortality means his wounds heal as quickly as the team land a blow.
He eventually stops playing around and reveals that he has Gwen’s powers and tries to kill Michael using them. Elliot steps in the way and is strangely unaffected. The boy-turned-super-soldier retaliates with his own volley of electricity which cancels out Drake’s powers and returns them to Gwen. Drake is wounded and he doesn’t heal, much to his own surprise. Alex takes his opportunity and STAKES Drake, getting his revenge. When the vampire dusts however, he merely reforms into Amarra (Jeremy Irons) who cruelly breaks Alex’s neck.
Retreating, the team mourn their losses and come to realise that Elliot is perhaps their only hope at victory. Elliot, speaking for the first time, reveals that he is not the only one, that Gwen has the power to win the battle as well. They are “Avatarsâ€, an ancient and powerful race, and they have been sent to Earth to observe the final conflict between their two creations: good and evil.
With this information, they lead the way into the final showdown with Amarra, who intends on drawing together the powers of his brethren (seen in 1x06) into the vampire God. He isn’t summoning anything, he’s becoming this God. He needs the powers of an Avatar to do it though, which he gets when Gwen and Elliot arrive.
The transformation begins when the team attack, the device Tory stole holding rings which grant the power of one of the pure-blooded vampires. Amarra becomes the Vampire God, the explosion of power literally blowing the roof off of his mansion, and the team struggle to hold him off. Tory leads the remaining members of Amarra’s cult against our allies whilst Amarra turns his attentions to the city. Maria sees Ben in trouble and he asks for her help, she doesn’t act and he's killed by Tory.
Whistler uses the powers he’s been holding back to deal with the vampires whilst Jacob, Victor, Gwen, Maria and Elliot cast a spell to strip Amarra of his powers just as the mystics did long ago to the first vampire God. They succeed, though the strain of such a powerful spell kills Jacob.
Amarra is stripped of his powers and burns up in the sunlight, leaving nothing remaining of the vampire God at all. Maria destroys the rings holding the power, and with that a shock wave runs through the room and all across the planet. There is nothing left of the original vampire, nothing to tie today’s vampires with their origins. They are, in a single act, stripped of their powers. Tory falls into the sunlight but doesn’t burn up. She runs away.
Whistler explains that he has to leave, The Powers are taking him away for using his powers and he disappears in an explosion of golden light. Elliot explains that despite the fact that he and Gwen may want Whistler back, they can’t. The other Avatars would not allow it as Whistler was supposed to be strictly neutral. He is gone forever.
Victor tells the rest of the team that Maria has been working behind their backs, and she is forced to run away when she cannot explain herself.
Gwen leaves the city and puts Victor in charge of the team when Elliot refuses - pointing out that he is supposed to be a mere observer and can only get involved when a fellow Avatar is in danger, though quite why Gwen has been allowed to get involved isn't revealed. A position of power would be too risky as he could become corrupted. Victor has no such qualms and takes the role happily.
Elsewhere, Maria asks her boss, the Black Coat Man what is going to happen now. Adam Kane (Ben Foster) steps out of the light, revealing himself to be the Black Coat Man and tells her that they are just beginning. He was Whistler's counterpart in the other world, and it seems that here he was something else entirely.
So, by the end of the season: Ben, Jacob, Drake, Alex, Whistler, Amarra, Willy and Gwen have all been written out with almost all of them being killed off. The team now consists of Michael, Elliot, and Victor - whilst The Black Coat Man’s team consists of at least himself (Adam) and Maria. Vampires have been stripped of their powers and weaknesses, though the issue of souls is not addressed.
