:: THE CAST

(Trent Reznor)

After sending his old business partner turned arch nemesis Malkuth to some unknown dimension, battling occultist turned possessed megalomanic Manon and getting himself flung to an apocalyptic, alternate future in the process, taking on the Trinity as they sought to change the entire world to their own ends, and leading his team into the middle of a werewolf blood feud, Chris Berkeley is clearly no stranger to the odd scrap or two.

With his old partner turned enemy turned colleague again Vivian back on the team, and his relationship with Lyra a little strained due to his continued use of black magic, Chris would be forgiven for taking it easy - but not when the Vampire Wars are about to kick off!

(Kate Towne)

Not many vampires can say they've escaped Hell itself. Fewer still can say they've escaped twice - but that's exactly what Twist McFadden has done, albeit with a little help from Chris. Now there's a deal with the Devil involved that will damn Chris if she doesn't do enough good this time round - so she'd better step up her game!

After losing part-time lover Diego in battle but reconnecting with long-lost little sister Sophia, an ill-advised hook-up with Danyael left plenty of tension between the two, as did the recruitment of old nemesis Vivian, but as Twist and the team start to take their places in the Vampire Wars, it may finally be time for Twist to get serious!

(Ville Valo)

Faithful to the team ever since bounty hunters destroyed his old life, DJ turned hero Danyael Norton has survived the end of the world (and his ex who was behind it all), continued to get himself into a mess over his feelings for Twist and also upped his game after becoming a better fighter to honour the memory of Diego.

As the Wars start to kick into a higher gear, Danyael's unique position as Rebel vampire liaison and ambassador leaves him with a potentially vital role to play - will he be the one to co-ordinate the scattered Rebel packs into a well-honed attack force, or will the young at heart, easy going vamp finally sink under the pressure?

(Fiona Apple)

Learning about her mysterious past finally gave Lyra Morley some of the closure she needed - stepdaughter to Dr. Parker, she was fatally wounded in a raid on one of his labs, and cloned many times as Parker desperately sought to resurrect his estranged daughter-in-law. Left blind by the procedure but with incredible powers of sonic manipulation, it took Lyra time to accept what she is...

... but with her very own knight in shining armour in the shape of Chris by her side, Lyra has established herself firmly within the team. Her relationship with Chris may not be as content as she'd like, but with Parker gone she can finally start living her own life at last - unless the good doctor had any more secrets in store for her!

(Jennifer Garner)

A former protege of Chris, Vivian Taylor may have succumbed to the dark side of her nature and thrown in with the villains, but after they double-crossed her she finally saw the error of her ways, starting a one-woman crusade to destroy Parker's operation - which brought her back into the fold of Chris' team.

Initial tensions with Twist soon faded as Vivian proved her worth again and again, her inside knowledge of Parker's operation making her a key part in halting his Zero Tolerance campaign and getting the team close enough to tackle the doctor face to face. But with her nemesis gone, what now for the reformed vampire?

:: THE REST OF THE SEASON ::

Following the trail of destruction they’ve been leaving since escaping Parker’s lab, the team manage to confront Clone Lyra and her minions, with Lyra taking point as she attempts to bring her evil doppelganger down. Lyra’s powers are still misfiring, however, and she’s no match for her counterpart – but manages instead to connect with the clone emotionally, learning how she was the last version produced before Lyra herself. Even as her powers fully return, Lyra lets the clone go despite the remaining mutants being killed, convinced that given time she can bring her ‘sister’ round and stop her rampage.

A young Rebel film-maker tags along with the team as they tackle a fairly standard mission to deal with trouble-making Trads in a city apartment block. His front lines documentary shows the team in lights they didn’t expect, highlighting the various tensions running amongst the group - as well as giving Twist and Danyael a big nudge to show they still like each other more than they’d care to admit. Vivian later edits the footage to remove something, although we don’t see what.

Attending a pow-wow of Rebel leaders to discuss the first stages of planning for the Wars, the team meet Raphael, deputy to missing Rebel founder Bernard and current head of the forces. The meeting is disrupted when Shareena sends a supercharged Trad assassin to take out the leaders, with Danyael taking him out but not before he’s killed several notable Rebels. The battered leadership are left to recover, with Raphael assuming more control as he takes over any leaderless Rebel cells.

The team get a distress call from old hacker ally Neuro, currently being forced by Shareena to find more Engine components. They arrive at his lair to save him, but Shareena magically zaps his consciousness onto the internet and leaves it to run riot, making good her escape as the team try to stop Neuro from bringing down every piece of technology on the planet!

After telepathically hearing her clone in trouble, Lyra goes off alone to find her, finding her ‘sister’ badly wounded after trying to find food and shelter and falling foul of the locals. Lyra fights back to protect her clone as the others try to track her down, leading to a standoff where Lyra insists she can reason with the clone and stop her from being a threat. She coaxes her clone out to speak with her, but the meeting soon goes sour when the clone attacks, and a heartbroken Lyra is forced to kill her.

The Furs are attacked by a monstrous vampire, the team responding to find the creature is called Caliban, and it’s one of Shareena’s bio-experiments. Caliban wreaks merry havoc as it searches for the hidden Engine pieces, the Furs taking a pounding and unable to stop Caliban escaping with what it needs. Shareena’s first act with the fully-assembled Chaos Engine is to use a blood sample recovered from Parker’s lab to take control of one of the team – Chris!

Chris is unable to fight the possession and attacks the team, escaping to Shareena’s lair to find Caliban dead and discarded. Chris is sent to retrieve one half of a pair of psychic twins, separated at birth because together their powers can reach untold levels. Raphael labels Chris an enemy of the cause, forcing the team to fight off over-zealous Rebels as well as the possessed Chris as they try to protect the twin. He defeats them and snatches the child, despite trying to fight the control over him.

Chris and the team are searching for the next child, Vivian locating him at a boarding school but getting cut off when Chris attacks. After Chris almost kills Vivian, he hands the child over to Shareena and is ordered to fight the team to the death! Lyra manages to break the possession by blasting Chris with enough power to strip his body of magic, but Shareena brings the twins together and prepares to use them in an impending ritual of some kind. She then uses the Chaos Engine to transfer the energy that was in Caliban, then Chris, into a waiting body. The body looks like Chris circa S1 but the person inside is an old face – it’s Malkuth, rescued from the void! Oh, and Twist learns that she’s pregnant after sleeping with Danyael way back in 4x01, the physics of vampire pregnancies taking a lot longer…

Malkuth learns that Shareena is head of a cult who believe he’ll lead the Trad race to victory in the Wars, and has rescued him for this very purpose. His current body has been modelled on Chris’ because Shareena believes this will allow him to exploit a loophole in the various prophecies and snatch victory. Chris, meanwhile, has to answer for his actions whilst possessed before Raphael, who is assuming dangerous levels of power – but Danyael learns of a plan to locate Bernard and bring him back to lead the Rebels to victory!

Malkuth gets straight to work, contacting various Trad nests and recruiting them to his team. The Trads lack a single leadership group like the Rebels, something Malkuth is quick to address. These efforts soon bring him to the attention of the team, although the identity of this mystery Trad leader is only revealed when he confronts them at last – and demonstrates how Chris still can’t harm him without also hurting himself! The battle ends in a draw, the team retreating as Shareena introduces the newly recruited Trads to the Chaos Engine, magically linking them to it as part of ‘the endgame.’

Vivian makes a breakthrough and thinks she’s perfected the formula for the blood substitute – which Raphael immediately demands she hand over. Concerned of how much influence this would give him, the team deny his request, and Raphael tries to secretly steal the formula back. After bringing one of the surviving scientists back to help, Vivian oversees a production run of the formula in secrecy, and it appears to be a success. The team keep this under wraps for now – and meanwhile Danyael and a small team of Rebels manage to locate the reclusive Bernard at last.

Raphael learns of Twist’s pregnancy, convincing the other Rebel heads that her baby is the key to the Wars – the first child born of vampires for hundreds of years, its blood may be able to restore any vampire’s humanity! He kidnaps Twist and subjects her to painful spells and experiments to prove his theory, as Danyael tries to persuade Bernard to return and lead the rebel army. Learning of Twist’s capture, he’s forced to leave and race back to help find her.

With Twist still holding out, Danyael leads the frantic search for her, finally confronting Raphael and battling him to a standstill. Raphael orders Danyael be arrested for interfering when more Rebels arrive – only for Bernard to emerge from the crowd and depose Raphael! He’s locked up, but Twist is in trouble – something’s wrong with the baby. She panics until Lyra finally comes out of her funk and uses her powers to heal the child, assuring Twist it’ll all be okay.

Wanting to mark his return to the Trads, Bernard challenges Malkuth to a duel despite the others trying to talk him out of it until they know more about what the Chaos Engine can do. He brings a force of his own to face Malkuth’s, only to find that the Trads’ powers have been boosted by their connection to the Engine, and they easily defeat the Rebels! Bernard is badly wounded and has to sound the retreat, Malkuth’s position as leader of the Trads now firmly cemented.

Malkuth and Shareena engage a plan to poison the water supplies of several major cities where Trad/Rebel battles are due to take place with Engine-contaminated particles, so any human who drinks it will fall under the Engine’s control and attack the Rebels too. The team manage to stop one tanker full of infected water from reaching its destination – but their hearts sink when they realise it was one of many, the others having reached their destinations and contaminated the water supply!

With widespread rioting and panic as the populace go crazy from the infected water, a state of martial law is called as the government tries to fix the situation. Vivian and the Rebel biologists manage to fashion an antidote, but with no clear way to deliver it, it falls to Chris to hijack a fire-fighting plane and dump antidote-laden water over both infected humans and water reservoirs. However, the Air Force are strict about enforcing their no-fly zone, leaving Chris with some fancy flying to do to save the day!

As the solar eclipse that signals the official start of combat in the Wars begins, Raphael escapes from custody and tries to assassinate Bernard. He succeeds in severely wounding him before Danyael stakes him – and Bernard appoints Danyael commander of the Rebel army in his place! Shareena uses the psychic twins to artificially extend the duration of the eclipse, giving the boosted Trad forces ample time to wipe out the Rebels! The team head out to tackle Shareena at her lair, with Twist eventually getting through her swathes of vamps and bio-creations to bring her down. There’s no sign of the Chaos Engine, but the team discover the Healing Device – and after a tense standoff with Vivian, Chris knocks Twist out and uses the machine’s one and only charge on her, before the others go after Malkuth.

Malkuth is set up in New York City at the heart of a ferocious Trad/Rebel battle, stationed at the peak of a tower block that the team have to fight their way into and all the way up through. On the roof they find the Chaos Engine, wired into the entire building, but Chris still can’t beat Malkuth in a fight even after he asks Lyra to take away his magic in an effort to break the connection. Twist shows up, her blood purifying Chris at last and enabling him to kill Malkuth, but Lyra sacrifices herself to destroy the tower block – which also dusts every Trad connected to it and hands victory to the Rebels! The eclipse ends with the human world having to finally accept the presence of vamps among them…

I loved writing SiB (5x03 was fun) and at least it's now out for everyone to see. :)

We ended up with a 16-episode, reduced order of this during the Writer's tale sessions, but I need to dig that out from those discussions and have it reproduced in a more readable format. Essentially I just cut a few episodes out - you'll already notice that 5x03 'When Worlds Collide' and 5x04 'American Werewolf' were merged into one episode (so I added some bits to Chris' script and that's the version online now), and I did that a few more times to give the season some more momentum towards the end.
