3x05 Like Lazarus With Tits

Back once again to our regular arc of characters. Every character here gets their own little piece. We see once again Jeremy is continuing to struggle, while Rose continues to bury her emotions for her mother.

Had a laugh over Betty's story about her strip poker escapades. Probably a little too much information there!  :D

A phone call from Naomi will certainly have shocked them and one has to wonder whether Ruth has truly kicked the bucket or not...

3x06 Bitch, Whore, Skank

Ah, Naomi is awesome. This was a great little episode. Naomi let's loose on Beck in the petrol station after wondering which packet of condoms she should get, and only probably hours after Paul's death. You can hardly blame Naomi. One has to wonder how someone like Beck can actually live with themselves.

Beck is lucky Naomi let her in the van. I reckon a lot of people out there wouldn't have.

Well it looks like our main characters are coming close to a reunion. I can't wait to see Naomi get back to Alex and Ben. But I have a feeling that wont be all too easy.

Is there an official airdate for Sequence 4 yet? I remember it was supposed to be late-January/early-February...

Not yet, Will. It's all very nearly done, I'm just waiting for Mr. Vaughn's episode and I have the finale to write and then a mammoth editing session. Don't worry - I'll keep everyone updated in this here thread. ;)

I read 3x01-3x04 yesterday. There was a bit of a hiccup on my Kindle (it kept cutting off the last line of each page!), but otherwise I followed pretty well...

Enjoyed sequence 3 a lot. Possibly the best so far. Yeah there's a bit of a quiplash issue, but I think we're at a point by now where we just have to accept these people throw humour at everything because they have zero other coping mechanisms. Hey, we're British. Expressing ourselves is impossible.

The structure really flowed this time, using the Fringe season 3-esque alternating of locations worked well. Funny stuff.

3x07 White Van Dead Man

This was a relatively quick paced story and served as a pretty good entree to what we were going to see in the finale. It was great to see Naomi reunited with our regular characters and very interesting to see the reactions between Alex and Beck upon the arrival at the farm house.

Again most characters got their own little bit in, which I think is a real strength of your storytelling since you have so little room to move in regards to pages. The ending was certainly an interesting cliffhanger which certainly raised an eyebrow.

3x08 Gloria Gaynor

The finale was a very good piece of writing. I think what you did with Beck was pretty clever. For once in her life she was courageous and thought of the greater good instead of herself. That was a hell of a way to go out. A really great scene.

The ending was certainly typical of this show - we got a glimpse of hope with our characters when they find this Lieutenant and it all falling to shit moments later as he himself is actually lost. Very twisted, but very good.

With a date set for the 4th season now, I'm looking forward to reading more and wondering where you're going to take this intriguing tale. Roll on the 14th of Feb.

Amen to that. I want to see where characters like Fal and Jeremy are headed, how much more physical comedy can be mined from the zombie genre (a great job done so far!) and whether Betty may somehow end up being the only one who survives this undead mess.

I actually considered at one point having only Beck and Paul survive the apocalypse, because of the absurdity of it all. But we'll have to see, won't we?

Luke’s Review of ‘Dog Shit Man’

Opening a man falling into dog shit definitely sets a certain tone for a script.  I’m not sure if I’m going to enjoy this or not.  Only time and, you know, reading, will tell.  I actually rather enjoyed that.  I love the banter between the three.  Naomi is easily the best thing in the script, she immediately stood out to me.  Calling the guy Dog Shit Man was great too.  I actually laughed out loud a few times when reading this one, my favourite line being, “NAOMI: Ben, honey, you take it up the arse. Don’t be a pussy.”  Definitely looking forward to catching up with this.

Goodbye to one of the most amazing shows ever created.

Luke’s Review of ‘Nipples’

I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one but that doesn’t mean it was a bad script by any standard.  A couple of funny lines in this one, “A little to the...Ohhh” and “Bam bitch is roadkill” both made me chuckle.  Ruth annoyed me but I can’t wait to see how she reacts when she learns of the zombie apocalypse.

That would've been incredibly twisted. Certainly not the two people you want to be re-populating the Earth.

* Overall... Sequence three so far has upset the beautiful comedic/dramatic balance the show had in S1-2. It's really been suffering from quiplash, with characters making jokes that run too long at precisely the wrong times. There's a difference between "I'm joking because I'm reflecting on the shitty stuff we've gone through," and "I'm joking in the middle of a fast-paced, stressful situation", and there was a whole lot more of the latter here than previous, it felt. Fal, in particular, felt a bit off.

Might be my sense of humour - I like a bit of farce now and then.

Quote
* Naomi's back! Funny, because remember when I was worried I was ripping off her situation a little in my Wreckage pilot? I was also planning a miraculous return soon after! Haha. Naomi and Beck is a good combo, but I hope in the back half Beck becomes a bit less caricatured so these scenes can really sing. Asking if she can go back to grab some booze after her husband just died, for example, felt really tone deaf - too much so for her to resemble a human being.

Alden my friend, that's why I so cagey when you PM'd me. I was trying to let you know what you'd planned was different without actually saying "she's alive!" but alas, looks like I was wrong anyway. ;)

With Beck, I mean ... I'm not sure why anyone would expect anything more from her by this point. I agree with your points totally, but from what we've seen of her before (TOTAL JUNKIE) I didn't think it was out of character at all. But you may still get your wish in the last 4. ;)

Quote
Good work here, Li, at any rate. I got a bit frustrated with the sudden tonal issues after 2 sequences of balancing those same things so well, but I'm still really looking forward to the back half of the sequence. :)

Thanks for reading Alden. I'm sorry you're not enjoying this one as much as the others, but hopefully the last 4 will bring the rest into perspective.

Thank you, Mr. Vaughn. I use humour as a defence mechanism, a coping mechanism, an everything-mechanism. I guess that's just transferred permanently into these characters because I think this is the kind of show where you can get away with all sorts. Might not get it right all the time, but half the fun is in trying.

I'm glad people have responded to the shift in structure too - I'll be playing with it in different ways in the future.

My intention from the very beginning (back when this was Blood Red Dress and intended to be a movie) was aside from the shenanigans to really focus on the characters; I can't see any way past it because let's face it, zombies have been done to death. The only reason I'm so enthusiastic about this show is because I love the characters so I'll keep trying to give the readers reasons to love them too.

This is kind of an accident that's reoccurred (S1 "yay we found them, but something really horrible's happened, S2 "yay we escaped but oh shit a lorry", and now S3) but one that I enjoy immensely. I will probably continue to end each sequence like this. You know, for shits and giggles.

Thanks for reading, Luke. I definitely wanted to set a tone straight off the bat - with the typical horror movie chase, then BAM! Dog shit. I won't deny it's the childish things that make me laugh.

This one, I vaguely recall, was a bit of a struggle. This was originally the pilot and then things got shifted around and re-written. Probably one of the shakiest episodes of the show I think. But I'm glad you got some enjoyment out of it - thanks for reading. ;)

Script Sunday!

Uncivil Union

Read all of these in one sitting. Maybe that's not the optimum way to read webisodes because the actual narrative felt a bit fragmented as a result, but that's not the fault of the writing as much as a limitation of the format. That being said - I really enjoyed this.

There was a very Shaun of the Dead-esque tone set in the build up to the reveal of the zombies - the living dead having started to walk the earth and everyone's completely oblivious. It was funny in that film and it's funny here too, because it rings very true to life (nobody would actually believe what they were facing was zombies). It's also quite obvious Li's had a lot of fun writing this - several of the supporting characters really shine, noteably Betty and the double act of Beck and Paul, were hysterical reading, and the final kick to the gut cliffhanger really worked with a beautifully underplayed reaction from Naomi.

My one real complaint is that Alex and Ben seemed like secondary characters in what should have been their stories, but again, this may be a limitation of the story. Li\s really grabbed the short story principle of "one thing happening only" and gone with it, and I laughed a lot. More please.

Thanks for reading, Adam!

I like to read webisodes all in one go, but yes this one is probably the most fragmented sequence of the 3 (4) - I attribute it mostly to not really getting a feel for the format yet. But I'm glad it didn't deter too much.

I think this was a general comment by most readers - unfortunately, again, I hadn't quite got a handle of the format at this point. I think Ben and Alex grow more as main characters throughout but now and then I just can't help throwing a supporting character to the forefront.

Thanks again for reading, glad you enjoyed it. :)
