Erin Lowe is a loser, an often drunk and inappropriately behaved legal secretary living in the big bad city who in her 26 years has just never learned to grow the hell up and stand on her own two feet. When one incident too far loses her her job and subsequently her apartment too, Erin finds herself out on the street with nothing but her bad attitude and a suitcase full of dirty clothes. Taking solace in a backstreet diner, Erin stumbles across a potentially life-changing experience – news of two young women looking for a new room mate for relatively non-existant rent.

But as Erin decides that she will now become New Erin and grab a firm hold of her life, she soon starts to wonder if perhaps her new room mates – nerdy nymphomaniac Nora and scary wild child Lacey – might be even more of a bad influence on her already disaster-hole of a life.

The British drama series follows the trials and tribulations of the staff of Beacon Hill Comprehensive, as they deal with the complexities of funding, internal politics, varied character struggles, and the looming prospect of being redeveloped into a £30 million local Academy.

While this process is a transition that will take place over the next few months, we’re delighted to announce the first in what could be many new series orders.

THE GAME, described by creator/writer Adam Scott as “a one-hour serialised drama series following the competitors in a highly illegal underground competition as they battle their way through a series of tasks set by the puppet-masters who control the rules”, will enter into development this spring/summer for airing later this year.

The pilot has been getting rave reviews all round, and we can’t wait to see what devilish tasks Adam cooks up for his unsuspecting victims. I mean characters.

But then a parcel is delivered. A simple parcel. Its contents are bizarre. Their abilities even stranger. And now, faced with ongoing personal crises and a collection of weird and wonderful people looking to take advantage, this girl is about to learn the one unquestionable, undeniable truth: being an adult sucks.

The rumblings, ruminations and ramifications of recent admin-related rambling have finally come to pass, gentle readers! MZPtv is about to undergo a big change, perhaps one of the boldest in its eight-year history…

We are moving to all original, creator-owned content.

:: But… but why? ::

When I founded MZPtv in 2004 it was for two reasons – to give the nearly-abandoned Buffy Season Eight (and associated projects) a place to stay on air after the original creative team broke up, and to provide a platform for my own VS Somewhere InBetween. Over those first few years, plenty of new shows were added to our roster – some were adaptations, continuations or spin-offs of existing properties (like The DSR), some were new and original shows (such as Gods or Pathways).

As the years progressed, we continued to have shows of both types come along, and with that also grew the use of casting, video credits and theme tunes to complete the multimedia experience – you weren’t just reading a script, you also had promotional artwork, actors to portray the characters, music to accompany the words and even title sequences, all the trappings of a real TV show.

However, one big drawback that always gave us was it limited our potential for growth and promotion. Copyright infringements have always been at the backs of our minds – the site has been under constant threat of getting slapped with a cease-and-desist by some soulless lawyer just for our existing content, let alone if we tried to actually make any money out of things. There have been numerous plans for donations, merchandise and even advertising that have all been abandoned because the legal complications were both too unknown and too scary to consider.

Added to that has been a degree of concern from both members and admins that MZPtv runs the risk of slowing down too much if we don’t find new ways to increase and develop our audience. In our time we’ve seen countless fiction sites and networks come and go – boredom, effort, exhaustion and other genuine constraints have claimed many sites by now, and we have a valued, enthusiastic community here that we want to protect. We could have the best writers and scripts in the world (which we do, in our humble opinions!) but if nobody’s around to read them, then we’re doing something wrong.

:: So what’s the new plan? ::

So after much deliberation, our new plan is to move ahead with making MZPtv a place where only original content is aired. This means that shows which are adaptations, continuations or spin-offs of existing shows, books, games and the rest will be moving to another location – either across our ever-increasing affiliate network of sites and forums or into a new site dedicated to airing them. We should point out that several in-progress projects will still be going ahead, and adaptation projects currently in development may well transform to all new, original properties to save all the hard work that’s gone into them.

Also going are any images, videos or music which we do not own – actors likenesses, clips from TV shows and movies and theme songs/incidental music. But before the wailing and the gnashing of the teeth, let’s look at what we’ll be doing instead.

:: The New World Order ::

We have plenty of amazing, exciting shows already on air, in development or ready to be greenlit for production, plans to relaunch some of our fantastic back catalogue of shows ready for a new audience and teams being built to push out and promote MZPtv to new and wider audiences.

Once our site is 100% all our own work in every aspect, the sky is the limit in terms of where and to whom we push ourselves. We’re looking at ways to expand our roster by linking to sites working in other forms of entertainment – video web series, audio dramas, web/motion comics, even prose – and to tackle the issue of not using copyrighted media we want to link MZPtv to communities of artists, musicians and filmmakers so we have a new library to choose from.

Imagine having a virtual series where all the artwork and imagery is your own, where the theme song and music are provided by actual musicians and artists specifically for your project, and where you could even have a credit sequence created and filmed to order. That’s the future we’re pushing for now – we’ve got so much incredible talent and passion on here, we need to start getting it out there to the right people!

:: So… all caught up? ::

We’re still in the early stages of this so it’ll be a gradual process – some older shows will be revamped and relaunched to make fresh, original properties, new shows are being developed to take advantage of this revived approach to virtual series, and as we get closer to each phase of the plan we’ll make a suitably big song and dance about it so you, the beautiful people, can get caught up in the excitement.
